Development test benches
With special test bench solutions, imx Solutions addresses engineers and technicians wherever electric motors are developed and tested at the highest level.
From small DC motors to modern synchronous machines for the automotive industry, whether with our standardized or customized test benches: Our solutions combine economic aspects with the technical requirements of precision, reliability and flexibility.
Test benches for e-motor development
Every test of an electric motor is the fine-tuned interaction of various hardware components such as measurement data acquisition, motor control, automation of the test sequences and evaluation of the results.
The test bench hardware is supported by our imx OMEGA software.
Together with a variety of automated test types, users obtain insights that are essential for the development of modern electric motors.
imx electric motor test benches extract the parameters and information that are important for developing with a high degree of automation and efficiency.
The motor flange is used as part of the test stand's precision drive train to mount the test specimen. Engine specific adapter rings allow different engine sizes and shapes to be used on one flange.
For motors that are not symmetrical, the specimen flange can be extended by means of centering clamps, mechanical X/Y adjustments or external rotor brackets.
A safety coupling between the load machine and the torque transducer is primarily used to protect expensive test bench components.
The coupling between the test specimen and the torque transducer is used to quickly adapt the test specimen to the power train and for backlash-free transmission of torques and speeds.
Dual-range sensors allow measurement of maximum torques, as well as low friction torques with high accuracy. A safety coupling between the load machine and the torque transducer is used primarily to protect expensive test bench components. The coupling between the test specimen and the torque transducer is used for fast adaptation of the test specimen to the drive train and for backlash-free transmission of torque and speed.
The Machinery Directive sets the tone: Safety first! Common protective devices in the field of electric motor test benches are mechanical guards, electrical emergency stop switches, safety light curtains or speed, voltage and insulation monitors, etc.
Load machines and brakes can be used to apply the load required for testing electric motors. Load machines can also be used to perform passive tests on electric motors, such as determining friction coefficients or generator voltage.
All interfaces required to operate a motor with an integrated controller (are available in the test room (e.g. LIN, CAN, FlexRay, etc.).
Often underestimated: Everything you need on the bench can be stored in the handy tool drawer.
The test bench has interfaces for connecting a keyboard, monitor, and mouse. There is also a second Ethernet interface. In addition, other interfaces can be provided, e.g. for integrating the test bench into a production environment.
The primary function of the power supplies installed in modern electric motor test beds is to supply power to the motors and their controllers. They must also perform other functions, such as returning generated power to the electrical test bench circuit for medium and larger test specimens.
Measuring currents and temperatures, and possibly other signals, requires the use of sensors. These sensors must be adapted to the requirements of measurement range, measurement accuracy and signal dynamics.
The imx test benches allow the testing of electric motors with or without integrated controller/inverter. In the vast majority of cases, the controller communicates with the test bench controller via standard interfaces such as LIN and CAN.
The heart of a test stand is the measurement and control unit. It is tailored to the specimen to be measured and its dynamic behavior.
High-precision measurement technology and sensors provide the basis for accurate evaluation results.
imx test bench solutions in the field
Various power classes
With the help of standardized and modular hardware components, imx designs test benches for different power classes, adapted speed/torque ranges and different voltage levels. Motors from a few watts up to several 100kW can be tested with imx test benches.
It is also possible to measure different motor types (e.g. DC motors and PMSM motors) on one test bench. This saves costs, resources and space.
Accurate measuring technology
To ensure precise measurement results at all times, all imx test benches are equipped with high-quality measurement hardware and sensors. This also means that the entire measurement chain from sensor to data acquisition is traceably calibrated as standard.
With an annual calibration interval, we also ensure that our customers are protected from surprises and that the investment in a test bench can be utilized for years to come.
Flexible power train
The importance of a robust, mechanically precise and versatile power train in a test bench cannot be overestimated. It is the mechanical centerpiece, the guarantor for precise, reliable and productive electric motor testing.
imx test benches for electric motor development focus on dynamic stability, precision and fine mechanical adjustment options. Our customers rely on this, because only the correct design and perfect alignment of the entire power train guarantee the best measurement results.
Complete integration
A key feature of the imx electric motor test benches in our standard series is the integration of all necessary elements into the test bench.
Â
The built-in components such as the measuring system, PC or electric motor controller and interfaces or the power supply are accessible via panels in the working area and are therefore available where they are needed. This ensures that the connections are clearly arranged and the risk of errors is minimized.
Safety first!
imx test bench solutions ensure the safety of people, test specimens and test benches. Automatic limit value monitoring observes critical parameters such as temperature, torque, voltage and current every millisecond and initiates predefined measures if necessary.
Naturally, all imx test stand solutions are supplied with CE labelling and risk assessment in accordance with the Machinery Directive.
Real test conditions
Temperature or climate chambers can be added to the imx development test benches in order to make statements about the behavior of an engine under "real" environmental conditions during development.
A test specimen can therefore be tested either in the test area of the test bench or under real conditions in the climatic chamber.

Our standards - reliable, precise & tried and tested
The range of standardized imx electric motor test benches is designed to test everything from small electric motors to motors with power ratings of several 100 kW. Customized designs are also available on request.
